Updates to Our Library Hours – Here’s What You Need to Know

Hey VIRL community! We wanted to let you know that we’ve made some changes to our branch hours across our 39 locations, beginning September 21. These updates come as part of a project aimed at improving how we serve you while keeping things sustainable for the long haul.


Why Are We Changing Our Hours?

  • More Access Where It’s Needed: Some branches will be getting extra hours to meet growing demand.
  • Streamlined Service: We’ve made these adjustments to help ensure that all branches can continue delivering the best service possible.
  • Long-Term Sustainability: Our goal is to align our staffing and hours with the needs of our communities, making sure VIRL remains strong and responsive for years to come.
  • More Full-Time Positions: We’re adding more full-time jobs across the system, creating more stable work. All permanent staff, including part-time, now get benefits — making things fairer and helping people stay long term.

 

What Does This Mean for You?

  • More Library Access: We’ve added 31.5 extra open hours each week across the system.

  • More Open Days: Branches are now open a total of 10 more days each week across the system.

  • Better Weekends: Expanded weekend hours mean more time to visit when it works best for you.

Some branches will see changes to their hours or open days, but overall we’ve balanced the schedule so every community continues to get strong, reliable library service.

This initiative is all about making sure that every library user across Vancouver Island has fair and reliable access to quality service. Here’s how it aligns with our Strategic Plan:
