The Vancouver Island Local History Society and the Nanaimo Museum have partnered to develop a travelling exhibit: The Great Vancouver Island Land Grab.

The exhibit introduces visitors to the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Land Grant of 1887 — also known as the great land grab. Through graphic novel and comic style panels, video, and interactive elements, visitors learn what happened, who is affected, and what it means for today.

Featuring illustrations by:

  • Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun – Snuneymuxw First Nation
  • Jordanna George, T’Sou-ke First Nation
  • Gord Hill, Kwakwaka’wakw Nation

The exhibit is bilingual (English and French) and will travel Vancouver Island through 2026 and 2027. The exhibit begins at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library in June 2026.

VIRL is proud to partner with the Vancouver Island Local History Society and the Nanaimo Museum to launch this. Or something like that.
