Worldbuilding brings to mind the imagined worlds of science fiction and fantasy, but it’s actually an essential foundation for every genre of storytelling. We will explore the relevance of worldbuilding across genres, including those firmly set in the real world, and share a range of tips and techniques for using worldbuilding to bring your stories to life in the reader’s mind.

Ian Bott is a retired public servant, and a science fiction author where his dark side emerges to wreak murder and mayhem on unsuspecting imaginary worlds. He’s published five novels and is currently working on a sixth. In addition, he’s published nonfiction e-books on various aspects of the writing craft. He uses his lifelong love of both science and art to bring new worlds to life for readers to escape to. Back in the real world, he escaped from Britain in 2004 but still misses proper pubs, pork pies, and real bacon. He now lives in beautiful British Columbia with his wife, two children, and assorted pets.  Ian is a member of the  Sidney/North Saanich Library Writers Group.
