ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Jo-Ann Canning learned how to garden on her grandparents’ Fraser Valley truck farm and in her mother’s urban food and ornamental garden on Vancouver’s West Side.

For over 45 years she’s gardened in climates as diverse as British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, Nova Scotia, the UK, the American Southwest desert and at altitude in the Rocky Mountains. In her 29 years as a Master Gardener she has helped manage community gardening initiatives, and taught urban food gardening to groups at risk of food insecurity. She’s taught seminars at VanDusen Garden Botanical Garden, horticultural associations and garden clubs, VIU’s master gardener training classes, the Horticultural Technicians’ Program at VIU’s Paine Centre, and VIRL’s Virtual Gardening video series. Her articles and photographs have appeared in local and international magazines. Jo-Ann’s present focus is on helping urban gardeners develop strategies in our changing climate to keep their landscapes sustainable as well as beautiful.
