Light the Way with VIRL

At Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL), we believe libraries strengthen communities by supporting learning, connection, and belonging. Every day, our staff help people access information, build skills, and discover new opportunities. Together, we are proud to Light the Way for the communities we serve.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dependable student to join our team as a Student Page at our Port Alberni branch. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful work experience while contributing to a welcoming and inclusive library environment that serves communities across Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, and Bella Coola.

About the Position

Student Pages play an important role in supporting the day-to-day operations of library branches. Working under the direction of the Library Manager, Student Pages help ensure library collections are organized, public spaces are welcoming, and branch operations run smoothly.

Duties may include:

  • Shelving and organizing library materials
  • Shelf-reading to maintain accurate collection order
  • Assisting with the processing of library materials
  • Preparing withdrawn materials for recycling or book sales
  • Tidying library collections and public spaces
  • Replenishing supplies and assisting with light cleaning duties
  • Supporting library programs, displays, meetings, and special events
  • Unpacking shipments and organizing materials and supplies
  • Assisting with opening and closing routines
  • Performing other related duties as required

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in high school or a recognized post-secondary educational institution
  • Provide proof of enrollment at the time of application
  • Demonstrate reliability and dependability in attending scheduled shifts
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with colleagues and customers
  • Be physically capable of lifting boxes, pushing book carts, and performing light cleaning and maintenance tasks
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and continuous learning

Previous experience in a customer service, retail, library, or community-focused environment is considered an asset but is not required.

A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check may be required.

Temporary Student Employment

Student Page positions are temporary appointments intended to provide meaningful employment opportunities for students while they are actively pursuing their education.

Appointments may be renewed annually, subject to operational requirements, satisfactory performance, and the employee maintaining student status. Employees must provide updated proof of enrollment each school year. Individuals who are no longer enrolled in high school or post-secondary education are not eligible to continue in the Student Page position.

How to Apply

Interested applicants must submit:

  • A cover letter outlining their interest in the position
  • A current resume
  • Proof of current enrollment in high school or post-secondary education

Applications that do not include proof of enrollment will not be considered.
