Why These Titles are Popular?
Local Librarian for Vancouver Island Regional Library, Steinunn Benjaminsson, comments that customers really loved their dark, suspenseful stories in 2018. These are mainly fast-moving, gripping reads that temporarily whisk you away for some exciting escapism.
“The fact that four authors appear more than once on these lists tells me that many of our readers really know what they like and happily turn to their favourite authors over and over again.”
In the non-fiction category, Benjaminsson adds, “The popularity of these non-fiction titles, half of which are biographies, illustrates how fascinated we are by the life experiences of others. The riveting cultural and political climate south of our nation’s border has clearly also inspired VIRL’s readers this year.”
Benjaminsson also notes that it’s no surprise that children’s book authors, Mo Willems and Jeff Kinney, made the top 10: “Comedy is always king. Willems writes books that are funny enough to make grown-ups genuinely laugh out loud and Kinney really ‘gets’ kids’ humour.”
