“Roll camera. Sound. Action!”
A few weeks ago the Creativity Commons Branch was bustling with “action” as a Film Makers Group captured interviews with various local dignitaries on the subject of food security for an informative documentary being created for Nanaimo Foodshare Society. They were fully utilizing VIRL’s green screen studio, and the members were involved in various stages of the shoot.
This gathering of Documentary Makers is the brain-child of Galen Dean Loven, a professional film producer who loves to share his passion with others. They have done many other collaborations with various groups around the Island, right now their focus is on Nanaimo Food Share. The members of the group were thrilled to discover Creativity Commons, upstairs at the Harbourfront Branch in Nanaimo. The Director of the group Gary Prendergrast said he had no idea that the library had so much technology available and he was excited to utilize the space and equipment.
Galen could definitely be described as a “super-user” of the library. When he needed to upgrade his editing software, he discovered it was too powerful for his home computer, so in a brilliant compromise, he donated the Corel View Studio Suite to the Harbourfront Branch. He worked closely with the IT staff to get it up and running properly, so now he is in-branch several times a week editing his work. It was at one of those visits that Galen was invited to bring his Film Making Group on a tour of Creativity Commons. He was also very excited to share all of the new technology at the Branch but admitted he hopes “it doesn’t get too busy!”
