Renovations set to begin on Sidney/North Saanich library

Sidney, BC: Renovations to the Sidney/North Saanich branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) are set to begin. The branch will close for renovations on Sunday, September 23 with a temporary location (Unit 1A – 2353 Bevan Avenue) opening the next day.
This temporary space will offer a small collection, including Express Reads, magazines and newspapers, as well as WiFi, public computers and limited seating. Library programming will be offered at other locations in the community during the renovations and the library will also offer “pop-up” library services at various locations.
Information about programming and pop-up library locations will be available from staff at the branch, on the South Island Libraries Facebook page and at virl.bc.ca.
Once the renovations are complete, the building’s infrastructure will have updated electrical, lighting, HVAC, windows, and more. The library’s interior will also be refreshed, made more accessible, and modernized.

- Improved layout to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers

- Accessible customer service desk
- New air conditioning system
The project’s budget of $2 million includes all aspects of the renovation. The Town of Sidney will finance the cost of an accessible washroom and other upgrades to the building’s common area.
The renovated branch is anticipated to reopen in June 2019 with the temporary space remaining open for the duration of the renovations. VIRL is currently reviewing bid submissions and should award the contract in the next few days.
