Q: Will I be contacted regarding my submission either way?
A: Yes, we will contact everyone with an email informing of our decision. We will not send responses until after the end of the submission period and reading period, once all decisions have been made, so please note that this could be several months. Response time will vary depending on the volume of submissions received.
Q: Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
A: Yes, we will accept simultaneous submissions. Just let us know if this is the case, and inform us ASAP if your work is accepted elsewhere so we can remove it from consideration.
Q: I was published in a previous issue of Sea & Cedar. Can I submit again?
Yes, please do! We do ask that if you have been published in Sea & Cedar, please allow one submission period in between before submitting again (i.e. do not submit for two back-to-back issues).
Q: Will you accept submissions in languages other than English?
A: No, at this time we are only publishing writing in English. This is due to limited resources and staff limitations.
Q: Are you accepting submissions from children or teens?
A: The target audience for regular issues of Sea & Cedar Magazine is adults, and at this time we are only seeking submissions from adult writers and artists.
Q: Does self published writing count as previously published?
A: Yes, we do consider self published writing to be previously published; we want to feature brand new writing that has not been seen elsewhere yet. Generally speaking, we are asking for writing that has been unpublished in any format including book, journal, magazine, website, or social media. Please contact us if you have questions about a specific circumstance you feel might fall outside this guideline.
Q: Can I submit work created with the assistance of AI tools, such as ChatGPT?
A: No. We are not interested in and will not publish AI generated art or writing. If your work is accepted, you will be asked within the publishing agreement you sign to verify that your work is completely original and human-generated, created without the assistance of AI tools such as ChatGPT.
Q: What if I want to publish the same piece(s) of writing in another format or publication in the future?
A: If we publish your writing in Sea & Cedar Magazine and in the future you want to publish it in another venue or format, we ask that you name Sea & Cedar Magazine (and the applicable volume) as the first publisher of that piece. Copyright always remains with the writer or artist. If you are submitting writing that we published previously to another magazine or anthology, you need to be aware what the requirements are for that publication—i.e. if they only want previously unpublished material, then having published in Sea & Cedar Magazine would disqualify that piece. If you are submitting to a publication or contest that accepts previously published material, you will need to acknowledge that it was first published in Sea & Cedar Magazine (and the volume).
Q: How can I contact Sea & Cedar staff?
A: Email seacedarmag@virl.bc.ca
