Parksville Renovation Closure FAQs
December 3, 2018 | Parksville
Why is the branch closing?
The Parksville branch is closing for some exciting renovations to improve the space for members.
When will the branch close and for how long?
The branch will close on January 1, 2019. The renovations are slated to take just over a month to complete with a projected reopening date of February 7, 2019.
Will there be a temporary branch during the closure?
No, due to the short nature of the closure, no temporary location will be available.
Can I still pick up holds and use the collection during this time?
Yes, prior to the closure, members can arrange with Parksville staff to have their holds picked up at either the Qualicum Beach or Nanaimo North branches while the library is under renovations.
During the closure, Support Services Staff will redirect Parksville holds to the Qualicum Beach Branch, if Nanaimo North has not been specified.
Where do I return my materials?
There will be no book drop available at the Parksville branch during the closure. You can return your materials to any other VIRL branch of your choosing. Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo North are the two closest libraries to Parksville.
What is my loan period during the closure?
All materials checked out from Parksville during the month of December will have a 70-day loan period. Therefore, items checked out on December 3 are due on February 11, 2019; if checked out on December 4, the due date is February 12, and so on.
The exceptions are eResources, ILLs, Reference materials, and book club sets, all of which retain their regular loan periods.
Staff can email ils@virl.bc.ca with questions about the temporary loan period.
The extended loan period applies to Express Reads.
Why are these renovations happening?
The space, which we lease from the City of Parksville, is having its floors replaced as a City Capital initiative. We have an opportunity to make other needed improvements to the space during this time.
What will the branch look like when it reopens?
Once complete, the renovated Parksville library will have the following features and amenities:
- New flooring
- New paint
- New lounge area with fireplace
- Replaced furniture throughout the branch
- Upgraded public computers
- New Circulation Desk
- New internal book drop
What is the total project budget?
The total budget for this project is approximately $150 thousand, with $40 thousand being supplied by the City of Parksville for the flooring. The budget covers all aspects of the renovations, including the furniture and updated IT infrastructure.
