New Chemainus Library Update
September 28, 2018 | Chemainus
Chemainus, BC – Plans are moving forward on an exciting new library for the community of Chemainus.
On Thursday, September 27, Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) tendered the project and is accepting bids from qualified contractors. The bidding period ends on October 31, after which VIRL will review the submissions and select a firm to undertake the project.
Because both the building and development permits have already been secured, once a contractor is selected, VIRL anticipates a quick transition to having shovels in the ground, with construction slated to commence before the close of 2018.
Vancouver Island is under a sustained period of intensive development. This, combined with a longer-than-expected design phase, has caused the project timeline to shift from its initial projection.
The budget has also increased from the initial projection of $2.25 million to a revised total of $2.7 million as a result of cost increases in the construction market and limited labour availability. The budget includes all aspects of the project, including construction, furniture, IT infrastructure, and more.Once built, Chemainus will have a state-of-the-art library with the following features and amenities:
- 5,000 square feet of floor space
- Increased staffing levels
- Expanded hours of operation
- A larger opening day collection with many new materials
- An expanded program schedule
- More public computersA vibrant children’s area
- A lounging area with fireplace
- A laptop bar
- Study space
- A bookable multipurpose room
Renderings of the new library are included with this release.
