Nanaimo Harbourfront HVAC Upgrade

February 14, 2025

Work continues on the Nanaimo Harbourfront branch heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. As a result, access to the library from Commercial Street will be closed on Tuesday, February 18.

Library users looking to access the branch can enter through the Diana Krall Plaza from Front  Street or Gordon Street.

The scope of this project consists of replacing the building’s original air units (installed in 1997) with heat pumps.

Q&As

Why is this upgrade needed?
Upgrading the branch’s HVAC system has many significant and necessary benefits, including energy savings and better air quality. Modern systems are more reliable and often feature advanced technology (including remote settings). Additionally, they will comply with updated building codes and contribute to a healthier living environment.

How will the library be impacted during the upgrade?
The library branch will close to staff and library users on January 13. Parking along Commercial Street and in the Harbourfront Parkade may also be affected. We will provide updates as it becomes available.

What services will be impacted during the closures?
Deliveries will not be impacted during the closure period, and holds on materials will be extended.
