Readers, we need your help! Read from a shortlist of Postcard Story Contest entries (up to 300 words) and pick your favourite. One reader’s name will be drawn for a prize!
Stories are available for reading at this link (to be added later) or at the Sidney/North Saanich Library. Stories were inspired by one of four images (see below: More info about the Postcard Story contest).
Cast your vote (one vote per person) at sidney@virl.bc.ca or at the Sidney/North Saanich Library. Include the name of the story, your name, telephone number, email address, and VIRL library branch. You must be 19 years or older to vote.
- Deadline for voting: March 31, 2025
- One reader’s name will be drawn for a $25 Sidney by the Sea gift card. Draw will take place April 1, 2025.

Writers wrote up to 300 word stories, fiction and non-fiction, inspired by one of four images:

Entrants are emerging and experienced writers 19 years and older residing in Central Saanich, North Saanich, and Sidney. Contest judges Angela Cowan and George Mercer selected four category winners and the Reader’s Choice shortlist.
Postcard Story contest prizes: Prizes are provided by the Sidney Business Improvement Area Society.
- First Prize: $100 Sidney by the Sea gift card
- Honourable Mention: $50 Sidney by the Sea gift card
- Most Surprising: $25 Sidney by the Sea gift card
- Potential to Grow: $25 Sidney by the Sea gift card
- Reader’s Choice: $25 Sidney by the Sea gift card
An event to celebrate all writers who participated in the Postcard Story Contest and announce winners, including Reader’s Choice, takes place Thursday, April 3, 6:30pm at the Sidney/North Saanich Library. Everyone welcome!
Reader’s Choice Giveaway rules
Eligibility
- Must be 19 years or older
- Participants must be able to pick up the prize at a VIRL branch.
- VIRL employees, their immediate family or persons living under the same roof, are not eligible to enter.
- One entry is allowed per person. The chances of winning depend on the number of entries.
- Winners must answer a mathematical skill-testing question correctly to claim the prize.
