Teen Drawing Contest

Calling all teen artists! We are looking for your best library and literacy-themed line art to feature in our Vancouver Island Regional Library Colouring Book for kids.

Winning artists will have their work featured in our new colouring book and win great prizes from Nanaimo’s Iron Oxide Art Supplies.

The grand-prize winner will also be featured on the cover.

Contest start date: January 14, 2025

Entry deadline: 11 p.m. on February 21, 2025

Eligibility and criteria

  • With a parent or guardian, review the rules and guidelines for the contest below.
  • Teens must between 12-18 years old, have a valid Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) Card to participate and be able to pick up their prize at a VIRL branch.
  • Multiple entries are allowed, but an artist can only win a prize once.
  • We are looking for clear line art only (art that kids can colour in) with black or blue ink (we love digital art too!).
  • The art must fit on an 8.5 by 11 vertical page 
  • Art must be original
  • Art must be library and/or literacy-related (feel free to incorporate our mascot Tales the Whale!)
  • Submissions must include the artist’s: name, age, location, contact and VIRL library card number. *Please note, the only information that will be made public is your first name and location.

How to enter

  • Digital art or art that has been scanned can be submitted to contests@virl.bc.ca. If your art is scanned, please ensure the lines are clear. Please also include your full name, age, location, contact and VIRL library card number.
  • Art submissions can be brought to your local Vancouver Island Regional Library branch,  but will not be returned. Please also include your full name, age, location, contact and VIRL library card number.

Judging

  • A panel of Vancouver Island Regional Library employees will choose 18 pieces of art based on creativity, artistic talent and how it meets the theme and criteria to be featured in our colouring book.
  • Winners will be notified by email and/or phone and announced on our website, newsletter and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) the week of March 3.

Prizes

A collection of different prizes from Iron Oxide Art Supplies.

We will have a first, second and third-place prize as well as participation prizes for any winners who do not win a top three prize and are featured in the colouring book.

  • First-place winner: The artwork will be featured on the cover of the new Vancouver Island Regional Library Colouring Book. The winner will also get a copy of the colouring book and an artist prize pack from Iron Oxide Art Supplies ( approximate value: $60).
  • Second-place winner: Will receive a copy of the Vancouver Island Regional Library colouring book and an artist prize pack Iron Oxide Art Supplies (approximate value: $50).
  • Third-place winner: Will receive a copy of the Vancouver Island Regional Library colouring book and an artist prize pack Iron Oxide Art Supplies (approximate value:$40)
  • Participation prize: Will receive a copy of the Vancouver Island Regional Library Colouring Book and an artist prize pack from Iron Oxide Art Supplies (approximate value: $20).

Rules and Guidelines

  • By entering this contest, contestants and their legal parent(s) or guardian(s) agree to have the contestant’s first name and location and artwork published in the Vancouver Island Regional Library Colouring Book, which will be available for sale at Vancouver Island Regional Library branches. The first name and location of contestants and artwork may also be shared on digital marketing platforms that include, our website, e-newsletter, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
  • You agree to the official rules and the decisions of Vancouver Island Reginal Library as it relates to the contest, which shall be final in all respects.
  • VIRL reserves the right to refuse, withdraw or disqualify any entry at any time at its sole discretion.
  • All submitted entries become the property of Vancouver Island Regional Library and will not be returned.
  • Winners must claim their prize within 10 days of initial attempted contact. If the original winner cannot be contacted within that time frame, a secondary prize winner may be chosen.
  • Winners must pick up their prize at their local Vancouver Island Regional Library branch.
  • Winner(s) may also be required to sign a release declaring their eligibility as stipulated in these rules; and releasing VIRL, any sponsor or prize donor and their directors, officers, and employees (the “Contest Parties”) from all liability for any damage or loss arising from participation in the contest or from the awarding, acceptance or use of the prize.
  • Prizes must be accepted as is and may not be exchanged or refunded for an amount of money, sold, or transferred. No substitutions will be allowed. Any unused portion of a prize will be forfeited.
  • If the prize cannot be awarded as described in these rules, VIRL reserves the right to substitute a prize or prize component with another of comparable value, at its sole discretion.
  • Refusal to accept the prize releases the Contest Parties from any obligation toward the winner.
  • If a contestant makes any false statement, (s)he will be automatically disqualified from the VIRL Contest or Giveaway.
  • The Contest Parties assume no liability for any loss, damage, or injury, including without limitation: (i) lost, stolen, delayed, damaged, misdirected, late, destroyed, illegible, or incomplete entries; (ii) loss, theft or damage to software or computer or telephone data, including any breach of privacy; (iii) fraudulent calls; (iv) inability of any person to participate in the VIRL Contest or Giveaway for any reason including mistaken addresses on mail or email; technical, computer or telephone malfunctions or other problems with computer online systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment, or software; congestion on the internet or at any website, or any combination of the foregoing; (v) damage to any person’s computer, including as a result of playing or downloading any material relating to the VIRL Contest or Giveaway; (vi) any delay or inability to act resulting from an event or situation beyond their control, including a strike, lockout or other labour dispute at their location or the locations of the organizations and businesses whose services are used to administer the VIRL Contest; (vii) any injury, damage or loss arising from participation in the VIRL contest or from the awarding, acceptance, or use of any prize, or (viii) prizes that are lost, damaged, or misdirected during shipping.
  • VIRL reserves the right to cancel or suspend the VIRL Contest or Giveaway should a virus, bug, or other cause beyond their reasonable control corrupt the security or proper administration of the VIRL Contest or Giveaway.
  • Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of the VIRL Contest or Giveaway is a violation of criminal and civil laws. Should such an attempt be made, VIRL reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution.
  • All personal information, such as name and contact information, required to enter a VIRL Contest or Giveaway is collected by VIRL solely for the purposes of administering the VIRL Contest or Giveaway and shall not be used for any other purpose without your express consent. By providing this information, you consent to it being used for the stated purposes.
  • VIRL reserves the right to amend the Contest or Giveaway Rules or to terminate any VIRL Contest or Giveaway at any time without any liability to any contestant.
  • The decisions VIRL makes, with respect to any dispute or issue involving a VIRL Contest or Giveaway, are final and binding for all contestants.
  • This VIRL contest is open to minors and as such,  a parent or guardian’s consent is
    necessary to obtain the prize, should the minor win. Where appropriate, the terms
    “contestant” and “winner” mean parent or guardian of that person.
  • VIRL also has the right to make alterations to art if required for printing purposes.
