At Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL), Family Literacy week begins January 23 and culminates with National Family Literacy Day on January 27. The goal of Family Literacy Day is to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

This year, VIRL is hosting a Family Literacy Beanstack Challenge which will go live from January  16 to February 5! Go to virl.beanstack.org to play during those dates. Families can choose to participate in as many or few of the activities as they like and you will earn a badge on Beanstack for each completed activity. You can also pick up a Family Literacy Activity booklet at your local library that has even more activities, puzzles and games!

ABC Life Literacy Canada is also encouraging families to use get outside and exercise both their mind and body together as a family. You can make outdoor time, fun family learning time, all while enjoying the wonders of Canada’s Great Outdoors. Check out their Top 10 ideas for outdoor activities for daily family learning.
