January 5, 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, January 5, 2022: From the outside, the new Sooke branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) appears ready to welcome its first patron. On the inside, workers are busily completing the final updates to the space to ensure the state-of-the-art new library has all the necessary amenities and features to maximize public use and enjoyment.
“This project has literally been years in the making and it is exciting to see it so near completion,” says Gaby Wickstrom, Chair of the VIRL Board of Trustees. “I would like to personally thank everyone who has played a role in bringing the library to fruition, including VIRL staff past and present, the architects, contractors, tradespeople, Sooke Mayor and Council, and my fellow Trustees. This library is sure to become a centrepiece and focal point in the development and growth of central Sooke. I cannot wait to tour the library when the doors open.”
Once it opens, Sooke will have a modern library with the following features and amenities:
- 13,412 square feet will offer a diverse collection, multiuse spaces, and more
- Iconic circular design will become a cornerstone of the community
- Exciting opening day collection curated for the community
- Increased staffing
- Expanded hours of operation
- Expanded program schedule
- Vibrant children’s area
- Fireplace lounge area
- Laptop bar
- Study space
- Bookable rooms
Since construction began, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the timeline and availability of resources. As a result of supply chain uncertainty, it is impossible to pin a precise opening date to the library at this time, but it is projected to open to the public this spring.
COVID pending, grand opening celebrations are also slated a few weeks after the soft opening.
More details will be provided as they become available.
