Job Description:

Vancouver Island Regional Library is looking for a Catalogue Technician for a Casual on Call opportunity with our Technical Services Team located at our Administration Office.

The Catalogue Technician is responsible for the integrity of the database records, copy and original cataloguing, editing of derived bibliographic records from vendors, and authority files maintenance. These responsibilities and tasks are carried out under the overall supervision of the Customer Service Librarian II-Technical Services and within the regional library’s policies, procedures, standards and resources. Troubleshooting, accuracy, organization, high productivity and independence are essential in this position.

All duties and responsibilities are directly aligned with the Mission, Vision and Values and Strategic Plan of the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

Representative Duties:

  • Download, edit and maintain on order and full MARC records;
  • Derive MARC or other records using ILS Integrated tools or accredited sites according to VIRL cataloguing standards;
  • Perform original cataloguing when necessary;
  • Create, edit, and maintain authority records as needed;
  • Participate in retrospective conversion projects;
  • Responsible for documenting VIRL cataloguing policy and procedures;
  • Responsible for the timely distribution of new items and donations;
  • Work collaboratively and independently to problem solve and troubleshoot Cataloguing and Departmental issues in a timely manner;
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education & Experience:

  • Completion of Library Technician Diploma or completion of a post-secondary degree with at least two (2) years of directly relevant experience working in a cataloguing department.
  • Practical Knowledge of RDA, MARC, LCSH, AACR2 and Dewey Classification required.
  • Applied experience requiring precision and a high attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent typing/keyboarding skills with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office including proficiency with databases.
  • Valid BC driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Criminal Record Check.
