
Sooke Region Lifelong Learning is a volunteer organization offering educational programs and workshops for older adults in the Sooke region. Based on the Elder College model, we provide stimulating and enjoyable learning environments which address the unique and diverse interests of participants.
Program Leaders: DK Eve
Doni Eve grew up on Vancouver Island, grateful to live, work and play in the traditional territory of T’Sou-ke people. She’s been a journalist, public servant, and hockey mom, is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s The Writers Studio and Carleton University’s School of Journalism. She is currently President of Sooke Region Historical Society and a member of Sooke Writers’ Collective. Her writing draws on Vancouver Island’s characters and settings and she has won several awards for poetry and short prose published in international, national, and regional anthologies and literary journals. She has led several workshops on various aspects of writing short fiction, creative non-fiction, and branding and marketing for writers, artists, and not-for-profit organizations.
Program description:
Workshop Two: Object Writing
Whether it’s a treasured heirloom or a familiar everyday object, the things around us can inspire rich and emotional stories. Discover how material objects can be the foundation to build a story or lead to interesting new writing. Participants will be asked to bring an object (or a photograph of an object) that has a high emotional value and will be guided to write about the object through structured questions.
Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their work and ask questions and will be provided with resources for further learning and information. Registrants are required to bring: An object or photograph of an object that has emotional value. It can be an everyday item, treasured heirloom, or sentimental gift. Bring something to write with (notebook and pen; tablet or laptop).
