SUMMARY:Why it Matters: Linking Homelessness with Housing Affordability
DESCRIPTION:Join Strong Towns Nanaimo for an informal talk and discussion with Dr. David Witty on the connection between homelessness\, housing affordability\, and the need for a “housing for all” approach in Nanaimo. \nDr. Witty is a planner\, urban designer\, educator\, and former Provost and Vice-President Academic at Vancouver Island University. He has held senior planning and design roles across Canada\, including as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba\, Director and Partner at Urban Systems\, and former President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. \nDrawing on his work with the Housing Nanaimo Working Group\, Dr. Witty will discuss the importance of affordable and non-market housing\, including supportive housing\, social and co-op housing\, and missing middle housing for young people\, seniors\, low-income residents\, and working families. \nThe conversation will explore how government\, non-profits\, the private sector\, landlords\, and community organizations can work together to address Nanaimo’s housing challenges\, as well as what helps or hinders the delivery of affordable housing locally.
