Sooke Region Lifelong Learning is a volunteer organization offering educational programs and workshops for older adults in the Sooke region. Based on the Elder College model, we provide stimulating and enjoyable learning environments which address the unique and diverse interests of participants.

Program Leaders: Hester Vair

Hester is a sociologist with an undergrad degree in Economics and Geography, a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies and a PhD in Sociology with a focus on gender, family and work. She retired to Sooke six years ago after 30 years of living and teaching in New Brunswick.

Program description:

We all know something about gender, and, as with many things we are familiar with, we rarely question it. We assume it is natural—but gender is complicated. It is a social phenomenon, not a biological one, nor is it a matter of individual personality, nor a residue of the norms of the past. Gender is an integral part of the way society works—part of its structure, you might say. But, at the same time, we are not in thrall to social structures, we are all choice-making individuals, and human society is creative, fractious, and changeable.  How can gender be both social structure and an expression of human individuality?
