Write a Halloween themed story or poem of no longer than 800 words and enter to win a gift basket valued at $50.00! All entrants will be gifted a book, and the winners from each age category will be published in the Comox Valley Record.

The contest is open to children and youth age 8-18 in one of the following age categories:

8-10 years of age

11-14 years of age and

15-18 years of age

Limit of one story per writer. Individual entries only; group or class submissions will not be accepted. The story or poem must be your own work: either an original piece, or a retelling (in your own words) of a creepy tale that you’ve heard.


Prizes will be awarded to the most haunted writing we receive.

Judges will select one winner in each age category. The winners’ writing will be published in the October 27th edition of the Comox Valley Record.

Three honourable mentions in each age category will also be selected.

Winners and honorable mentions will receive a gift basket of spooky treats valued at $50.00.  All entrants will receive a free book for participating.

Winners will be announced the morning of October 27th, 2021

How to enter 

Entries can be submitted by either:

1)      Completing an entry form and dropping off your writing in person at Library branches in Comox, Cumberland and Courtenay.


2)    Filling out the online entry form and attaching an electronic copy of your work.

All entries must be received by Wednesday October 20th 2021 at 8:00PM. Contest open only to Comox Valley residents. 

This contest is held in partnership with the Comox Valley Lifelong Learning Centre, Vancouver Island Regional Library, and The Comox Valley Record.
