Come down to the Nanaimo Harbourfront library on the third Thursday of every month for a thought-provoking film. We will be featuring documentaries, classics, foreign films and independent gems.
Thursday, October 17, we will be screening Searching for Winnetou. This film by Canadian author and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor investigates the fascination of German people with North American Indigenous cultures. The CBC documentary is a fascinating exploration of “cultural appreciation vs appropriation” from the perspective of a prolific and beloved Indigenous writer.
This event is inspired by the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s year long inquiry, What Are Generations? The current exhibition, Truth to Material, features artwork by Syilx/Okanagan artist Krista Belle Stewart. Much like this film, the exhibition encourages participants to re-evaluate history, tradition, and culture.
