Rhododendrons & Friends: The Icon Evergreen Shrub and its Compatible Acid Lovers
Spend an hour and a half with our Master Gardener rhododendron expert and learn all the basics about this long-lived, evergreen shrub. This seminar will introduce you to the surprising variety of rhododendrons, what they need to stay healthy in your garden, and what to look for when you want to buy one. A few other acid-loving shrubs that make good companions to rhodos in your garden will also be mentioned.

About the Instructor:
Chris Southwick is a third-generation Vancouver Islander whose grandparents, Ted and Mary Greig, were pioneering rhododendron and alpine plant enthusiasts and breeders on Vancouver Island. Chris has co-chaired the annual Nanaimo Rhododendron Society Show and Sale, judged shows for other Vancouver Island clubs, and was co-chair of the 2012 Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society Regional Conference. She was honoured with the NRS Bronze medal in 2008 and currently serves as vice president of the Nanaimo Rhododendron Society. Since retiring from her career as an educator and school principal, Chris has shared her knowledge and love of gardening as a Certified Master Gardener. She is president of the Vancouver Island Master Gardeners Association as well as a serving on a committee creating a rhododendron species garden at Milner Gardens and Woodland in Qualicum Beach.
The Vancouver Island Master Gardeners Association (VIMGA) is a chapter of the Master Gardeners Association, an international service society of specially trained volunteers who teach science-based sustainable gardening practices to home gardeners. VIMGA is one of the 5 chapters in the British Columbia Association and partnering with the Victoria chapter, specializes in the stewardship of Vancouver Island’s unique environment.
