SUMMARY:Canada’s Changing Climate Report 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation about the newly-released Canada’s Changing Climate Report 2026\, a national assessment prepared by more than 100 Canadian climate scientists and oceanographers.  Learn how and why Canada’s land and oceans are changing and how people can use the report. There is even a little bit of good news at the end! \nThe presentation will be given by Dr. Sophia Johannessen\, one of the Coordinating Lead Authors of the report (and 2026 Scientist-in-Residence at the Sidney North Saanich library). We will meet in the Nell Horth Meeting Room attached to the Sidney / North Saanich Library (10091 Resthaven Dr.). \nPlease register by phone 656-0944\, email sidney@virl.bc.ca or in-person at the library Service Desk. Seating will be limited to 60 people. \nAbout Dr. Sophia Johannessen: \nDr. Sophia Johannessen is a geochemical oceanographer at Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Institute of Ocean Sciences in North Saanich. She studies the effects of climate change and other human activities on the coastal ocean. Her recent projects include studies of the change in productivity in the Salish Sea\, the fate of diluted bitumen spilled in BC coastal waters\, and the potential for “blue carbon” storage in seagrass meadows for climate change mitigation. She works mainly in the coastal waters of British Columbia\, but she has also worked in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and most recently in the coastal waters of Antarctica. \nPhoto credit: Rob Macdonald
