Sooke Region Lifelong Learning is a volunteer organization offering educational programs and workshops for older adults in the Sooke region. Based on the Elder College model, we provide stimulating and enjoyable learning environments which address the unique and diverse interests of participants.
Program Leader: Sharon Hanslip.
Sharon has lived in Sooke for 23 years. She has been quilting for 30+ years and has been a member of many quilt groups including four years as President of the Sooke Quilters.
Program description: The 150 Canadian Women quilt was designed by Kathryn Wilson Tucker of Calgary, AB to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1, 2017. It took most of 2016 to complete this quilt. Reading about the 150 Canadian women featured on the quilt inspires one to learn more about them and other Canadian women. These women are pioneers of their various times—entrepreneurs, feisty, who do not take no for answer. These women blazed a trail for those coming behind them. The quilt features women such as Maude Abbot, Dr. Roberta Bondar, Jeanette Butchart, Emily Carr, and Viola Desmond, to name a few. There are also many regretfully lesser known Canadian women represented in this quilt. Sharon has kept all of the patterns and biographies and they are available to anyone interested in reading them.
