DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Island Local History Society and the Nanaimo Museum have partnered to develop a travelling exhibit: The Great Vancouver Island Land Grab. \nThe exhibit introduces visitors to the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Land Grant of 1887 — also known as the great land grab. Through graphic novel and comic style panels\, video\, and interactive elements\, visitors learn what happened\, who is affected\, and what it means for today. \nFeaturing illustrations by: \n\nEliot White-Hill\, Kwulasultun – Snuneymuxw First Nation\nJordanna George\, T’Sou-ke First Nation\nGord Hill\, Kwakwaka’wakw Nation\n\nThe exhibit is bilingual (English and French) and will travel Vancouver Island through 2026 and 2027. The exhibit begins at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library in June 2026.

Take a look at the great back catalogue of our Virtual Gardening Series here. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER: \nJo-Ann Canning learned how to garden on her grandparents’ Fraser Valley truck farm and in her mother’s urban food and ornamental garden on Vancouver’s West Side. \nFor over 45 years she’s gardened in climates as diverse as British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast\, Vancouver Island\, Nova Scotia\, the UK\, the American Southwest desert and at altitude in the Rocky Mountains. In her 29 years as a Master Gardener she has helped manage community gardening initiatives\, and taught urban food gardening to groups at risk of food insecurity. She’s taught seminars at VanDusen Garden Botanical Garden\, horticultural associations and garden clubs\, VIU’s master gardener training classes\, the Horticultural Technicians’ Program at VIU’s Paine Centre\, and VIRL’s Virtual Gardening video series. Her articles and photographs have appeared in local and international magazines. Jo-Ann’s present focus is on helping urban gardeners develop strategies in our changing climate to keep their landscapes sustainable as well as beautiful. \nABOUT VIMGA: \nThe Vancouver Island Master Gardeners Association (VIMGA) is a chapter of the Master Gardeners Association\, an international service society of specially trained volunteers who teach science-based sustainable gardening practices to home gardeners. VIMGA is one of the 5 chapters in the British Columbia Association and partnering with the Victoria chapter\, specializes in the stewardship of Vancouver Island’s unique environment.
