DESCRIPTION:Join craft artist Lorrie Joran for these two amazing workshops on May 24th at the CMESS School Multi-Purpose Room. \nNeedle Felting (10am – Noon); Learn the art of needle felting and create a mushroom\, owl\, gnome or a penguin. All materials are provided. If you sign up for both workshops\, your felt creation can be part of the Miniature Making. \nMiniature Making (1-3pm); Learn about scale and how to create an artful montage and/or a diorama using miniatures from ‘junk’ and recyclables. Materials are provided with the (encouraged) option to bring small items from home. Lorrie suggests finding items in a junk drawer\, jewelry box\, anything diminutive in size that would fit into a theme of your choice. \nThese workshops are Adult/Teen oriented (12 years old and up) and registration is required for both workshops as space is limited. SUMMARY:Why it Matters: Linking Homelessness with Housing Affordability
DESCRIPTION:Join Strong Towns Nanaimo for an informal talk and discussion with Dr. David Witty on the connection between homelessness\, housing affordability\, and the need for a “housing for all” approach in Nanaimo. \nDr. Witty is a planner\, urban designer\, educator\, and former Provost and Vice-President Academic at Vancouver Island University. He has held senior planning and design roles across Canada\, including as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba\, Director and Partner at Urban Systems\, and former President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. \nDrawing on his work with the Housing Nanaimo Working Group\, Dr. Witty will discuss the importance of affordable and non-market housing\, including supportive housing\, social and co-op housing\, and missing middle housing for young people\, seniors\, low-income residents\, and working families. \nThe conversation will explore how government\, non-profits\, the private sector\, landlords\, and community organizations can work together to address Nanaimo’s housing challenges\, as well as what helps or hinders the delivery of affordable housing locally.

Young readers can bring a book and sign up for a 20-minute reading session with Rosie\, a certified therapy dog from the Pacific Animal Therapy Society. \nRosie is a patient and friendly listener who loves stories and meeting new friends. This program helps children practice reading aloud with a comforting companion\, build confidence\, and make reading a fun experience. \nTo register\, visit the branch or call 250-642-3022 to book a 20-minute slot.
