SUMMARY:Truth for Reconciliation Photographic Slideshow w/ Mary Coakley
DESCRIPTION:Mary Coakley will present a photographic slideshow that chronicles her five month 2022 Solo Northern Canada Expedition during which she drove to the furthest points north\, along the most northern west to east roads. This took her to Tuktoyaktuk\, Yellowknife\, the northern end of James Bay and to Northwest Newfoundland. And much of that journey was in Indigenous communities. Her presentation will introduce her research into the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report and the history of residential schools\, then through her travels\, leading up to the portraits of the individuals who agreed to allow their images and stories to be told\, and summarizes her experience and key messages from elders and T&R educators.

SUMMARY:Reader's Choice Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the inaugural meeting of Nanaimo’s new monthly book club: Reader’s Choice Book Club! \nWant to talk about what you’re reading but don’t want to be told what to read? This is the book club for you! For our first meeting\, bring whatever you’re reading or have read recently to share with the group. \nFor future meetings\, you’ll have the choice of choosing books from a list of 15 prompts like  \n\nRead a staff pick from your local library or indie bookstore\nRead a book set in or written in the 1980s\nRead a book in translation\nRead a book about (time) travel\nAnd more!\n\nYou can read any book that fits any prompt\, whatever month you want. Then you can compare notes with bookish friends at our meetings! The idea is to have fun parameters to help you decide what to read next\, but not to force you to read anything you don’t want to. \nAppetizers to share will be provided by the library. If you’re able\, buy a drink or some food to support Lighthouse Bistro and Pub for hosting us! \nEmail NanaimoHarbourfront@virl.bc.ca for more info and to save your spot!
