1986: V.I.R.L. 50th Anniversary
In early 1982 or 83, Mr. Fred White, Executive Director of the Vancouver Island Regional Library, visited the Queen Charlotte Islands to promote the islands’ participation in the regional library. Mr. White held a meeting in Port Clements and interested persons attended from Masset, Queen Charlotte City and Sandspit.
As a condition of joining the Regional Library the two incorporated communities of Masset and Port Clements and the unincorporated areas represented by School District #50 all had to agree to participate in the service. Port Clements and Masset readily agreed to join.
Port Clements was very active in encouraging the School District to participate, and they agreed to join in the fall of 1983.
The Port Clements Branch opened in October 1983.
1996: V.I.R.L. 60th Anniversary
The Port Clements library opened in October 1983 in the fire hall building. Leona Stephenson was the first Branch Head, followed a few months later by Brenda Chapman.
Brenda resigned in August 1988 and Catherine Zimmerman was hired to replace her. Five years later Catherine moved away and was replaced by Sandspit Branch Head, Sheila Heit in May 1993.
The library is still next to the fire hall and in this anniversary year, a second floor (for fire hall use) has been added above it in an attempt to control roof leaks.
The circulation, after being consistent for many years, rose by 25% in 1995 over the previous year.
2006: V.I.R.L. 70th Anniversary
(by Rand Flem-Ath)
Ruth Bellamy becomes Branch Head in September of 1997.
Port Clements Volunteer Fire Department enlarges the branch by donating their storage space. They knock the wall down between their space and the library while the library is open on Wednesday night! There are shelves between them and the branch though so it is only loud, not dangerous.
Rand Flem-Ath became the Library Manager in September 2002 replacing Alison Fitzgerald who had held the position since 1996.
The branch now has two public access computer stations with UserFul software. Broadband improvements occurred in 2006 and we look forward to the possible move to a new facility in 2007.
